Standard we aim for
IVSA targets WCAG 2.1 Level AA across the public directory, profile pages, and member-facing dashboard. Where compliance gaps exist, we treat them as bugs and prioritize them alongside other product work.
What's in place today
- Semantic HTML and landmark regions on every page.
- Skip-to-content links and keyboard-navigable controls.
- Color contrast ratios at AA or above on body copy and primary actions.
- Focus indicators visible on all interactive elements.
- Form fields paired with descriptive labels and inline error states.
- Reduced-motion preferences honored on animated UI (continent grid, profile transitions).
- Alt text on meaningful imagery and aria-hidden on decorative SVG patterns.
Known limitations
We're a young product and not perfect. Areas under active improvement:
- Older school-supplied photos may lack descriptive alt text until schools add it via their dashboard.
- The comparison table on /join scrolls horizontally on narrow viewports — we're working on a stacked variant.
- PDFs and documents uploaded by third parties are not retroactively accessibility-checked.
Assistive technology compatibility
We test with the latest versions of VoiceOver (macOS, iOS), NVDA (Windows), and TalkBack (Android), against current Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. If you use a different combination and run into issues, we'd like to hear about it.
How to report an issue
Email accessibility@ivsa.org or use the contact form. Tell us:
- What page or feature.
- What assistive technology you were using.
- What you expected vs. what happened.
We'll acknowledge within two business days and share a remediation plan with a target date.
Reasonable accommodations
If you need access to information on IVSA in an alternative format, contact us and we'll provide it. This includes large-print versions of policies, school information sent by email rather than retrieved from the directory, or other accommodations.
